One Sheet Journal Teesha Moore Style - #100thingschallenge #2

I have had a sheet of watercolor paper rolled up in my closet for 2 years.  No, really, 2 whole years.  The receipt was still in the bag and I bought it in 2015.

That means that 2 years ago I bought it to try my hand at making one of Teesha Moore's 16 page journal's created with one 22x30 sheet of paper.

It is actually a very simple project.  I'm not sure why it took me 2 years to do it!  Here is what my finished book looks like, before it has been used at all.

My biggest problem was that my paper had been IN A ROLL for 2 years. That means it wanted very bady to remain in a roll.

I've taken off the clips that held it round, but it remained round.

 I had to weigh it down on both sides in order to measure and cut my pages.

Then my pages wanted to curve!  They would not lay flat.

That didn't bother my folding of the page flaps, but it made binding the whole thing together a little more difficult than it out to have been.

So that is #2 in my #100thingschallenge.  I'm sure you'll see it again when I start using it in its intended purpose as an art journal.

Work in Progress (WIP) Wednesday

Hello again my creative friends!  I hope you've all had a wonderful and creative week since last Wednesday!

Updating my WIPs, I finished my InkJet Image Transfer and it wasn't a total fail, but it wasn't a total win either.

The eggshells I was saving to make eggshell pendents ended up in the garbage for now.

I've started painting some of the rocks I have around here and hiding them because that is a thing apparantly.

Also, I unearthed a roll of watercolor paper which will soon be turned into an art journal following a style I've seen on youtube.  That's gonna be my next #100thingschallenge post so stay tuned for it.

Inkjet Image Transfer with Mod Podge - #100thingschallenge #1

So, once upon a time I found some wooden wall art on clearance.  I can't remember the price but they were either $0.75 or $0.50.  I thought they would make an awesome project, but they had one fault.

They all had gardening themed sayings on them.  Not sure if the words would sand off or not, I only brought one home with me.

As it turns out, the black words did sand off quite nicely when I went at it with my sanding block.  Actually, it had more paint on it than I thought it did, since some color came off too.  But it didn't look bad, and now I knew what I wanted to do with it.

I have a photo of my newly adopted dog, Oscar, and it has a distressed look to it, so I thougt I'd finally do something I've been wanted to do.  I wanted to try an image transfer on this block of wood.

I only have an inkjet printer though, so I was worried that it might not turn out right, since all image transfers call for laser printed images.

I had some Mod Podge Photo Transfer on hand,
though there are other mediums that can be used for image transfers.

I printed out my image, smothered my wooden base with the transfer medium, then lay my image face down on top of it.  Using a gift card I scraped the paper down flast, rubbing any air bubbles out of it.

The came the hardest part of the whole process.  I set it aside to dry.  They say it has to dry for 24 hours!  So, for a whole day I don't know if the image is going to turn out or not!

The next morning after I let the transfer sit under a damp rag for several minutes, I started rubbing off the paper.  I IMMEDIATELY knew I wasn't going to have a perfect transfer.

Most of the color wiped right off of my picture.

Now, around the edges there are still thick globs of dry transfer medium that are still solid white.  I'm wondering if using a different method of transfer would come up with a cleaner image? 

If they have any more of the wooden wall art, I may give it another try with a different medium.

Work in Progress (WIP) Wednesday

Ladies and gentelmen, wonder of wonders, I attempted a couple of projects this week!

I tried to do an image transfer on wood using an inkjet print.  If it works (because at the time of composing this it's not done yet) I have a full canvas I'd like to try.

I prepared some egg-shells for some eggshell mosaic pendants I'd like to try.

I've also dug up a couple of craft kits to finally try, thanks to the #100thingschallenge

Okay friends, let me know if this rings true for you like it does for me.

You have stuff at home.  A lot of stuff.  Maybe you're a jewelry maer and you have a ton of beads.  Or you knit/crochet so you have a stash of yarn.  Or, if you do mixed media like me, you have a TON of random everything everywhere in your house.

BUT...

Despite having all this stuff already, you always find yourself in craft stores or thrift stores buying more and more and more stuff.  Things are coming in faster than they are going out.

Is that correct for you?

This is just a small part of my hoard!

I can't remember the last time I finished a project, (not counting my gluebook) but I keep bringing things home.  And it doesn't help that I WORK in a craft store so I can't avoid temptation.

Well, I found danceswithpitbulls on youtube, and she had issued a challenge.  To NOT buy any more craft supplies until you have made 100 things using what you already have!

I loved that idea, and wanted to take the challenge.

Most people are doing it on youtube, but we all know I'm not a good youtuber.  So I thought I'd blog it out!  I make make occasional videos too, we'll just have to see.

This past week I played with the recycling again and made a Donut Trinket Box!

Last night I bought myself a new cross stitch kit to work on:

Donut Trinket Box - Make it Monday

Make A Donut Trinket Box 

June 2nd was National Donut Day.  And while I missed the actual day by a week or two, who doens't love donuts no matter WHAT day of the year it is.

So when I saw this adorable Donut Trinket Box on HGTV Handmade I had to give it a try.  It was adorable and it looked simple enough. It didn't take much and and had it all on hand.  You probably do too!

Supplies

Recycled cardboard
Hot Glue Gun with Glue Sticks
Scissors
Donut Template (see video below)
Acrylic paint and brushes.

So, I ran to my recycling, grabbed  some cardboard, printed out the template and started my first attempt.

DIY Tip: Print the template out on thick cardstock instead of plain printer paper to make it easier to trace around.

Unfortunately my first attempt was a flop.  I got my temples printed and cut out, got my glue gun heated up and then I struggled to get my cardboard sides to fit around my donut box's top and bottom.  In the end it was a hot glue smeared, stringy hot mess that wouldn't fit together because my inner holes became the same size!

The biggest thing I took away from that even was the following:

DIY Tip:  Use a THICKER cardboard for the top and bottom of the doughnut.  Courogated shipping boxes work well.  Use a thinner cardboard, like a cereal box or toilet paper tubeingfor the outer and inner walls of your doughnut trinket box.

I didn't let that stop me though.  Armed with a little practice, I re-cut my top and bottom out of thicker cardboard and tried again.

This go around I had much less problem gluing on the sides because my base had more thikness for the glue, and my sides, to actually stick TO.   In the end there were less gluts of glue, and the top of my Donuts Trinket Box actually went on to the bottom of the box properly!

Now that the thing was built it was time to decorate it!  This is really the best part!  I made mine a chocolate donut with strawberry icing!

DIY tip: If your recyled cardboard is glossy (the outer sides of packaging usually is), you should sand it down so your paint will stick better.

If I were to make another box I think I would make the wall of the bottom  2 inches instead of 1 inch, to see the differene in my bottom and icing better.  Also, It would hold a few more things.  I think I would also make the drippy side of the icing BEFORE I glued it to the top of the donut.  It was a little difficult to cut after it was together.

I finished my little Weeping Angel.  Isn't she adorable!

I'm thinking about randomly leaving her on my bosses desk.  He thinks they are the best villian ever.

Recently I've not been working on anything other than spreads in my tiny art journal.

I plan to soon start working on a Traveler's Journal.  A fauxdori a lot of people call them, because of Midori being the most popular ones.

So, stay tuned for that, and for me to make some refills for the TJ's I already have.

WIP Wednesday #21

Welcome Back Friends!

Sorry for the hiatus I took here.  In November we lost one of our fur babies, our 13 year old Labrador Boomer.  December is just a hectic busy time of year for me (I work retail!) and in January our other doggie has faced his own life-threatening medical problems.

I wanted to make 365 tiny works of art this year but I'm a month behind on that.

I did start stitching again this month though.

My FB and instagram friends guessed a lot of bird like things for what this stitch in progress was going to be.

Even when she was finished my husband said, "That looks like a very buff eagle."
