Chic Black and Gold Tile Coasters

COASTER INSPIRATION

Surfing the crafty side of the internet today I came across some Copper Leaf Coasters that I loved the look of.

I also just happened to have some ceramic tile laying around, from a previous coaster project I never did do.

What I didn't have was copper leaf, or gold leaf, or any leaf really.  I've never leafed anything before.

I did have gold paint, though, and thought I'd try my own take of the Copper Leaf Coasters using gold paint instead.

SUPPLIES

Ceramic Tiles (or plain coasters to upcycle)
Low Tack tape (washi tape or painters masking tape work)
Americana Multi-surface paint (I used Black Tie and Gold)
Paintbrushes
Mod Podge Hardcoat
Cork or felt

Gold Splatter Tile Coasters

Step 1

Tape off the edges of your tiles.  I used some Washi tape I had on my desk.

Paint your base coat on the tiles.  Americana Multi-Surface paint is an indoor/outdoor paint and works fine on ceramics.  It will take more than 1 coat to cover completely, however.

My coasters took 4 base coats to be solid.

Step 2

Once dry, mask the top of your tiles where you DO NOT want paint with tape.  I covered all but 1/3 of the tiles surface.

If you look at the image at the top you'll see gold polka dots.  That came from the washi tape I used, so if you use Washi, make sure it doesn't have any foil elemnts (unless you want to try for a foil transfer, then go ahead!).

Step 3

SPLATTER!

Using the gold paint, pretend you're in kindergarten again and splatter the gold paint all over the exposed surface.  The look is meant to be random!

My paint was too thick, so you can add water to yours if need be, or just brush random daps and dashes onto the coasters surface.

Step 4

Gently remove the masking from the top of the coaster and set aside.  Pull the tape from the sides of the coaster and discard.

Reuse the tape you set aside to cover the top edges of your coaster.  That keeps you from getting paint on the top while you paint the edges.

Step 5

Paint the edges of your tile gold.  Again this will probably take multiple coats to achieve the desired effect.

Step 6

Cover the whole shebang (top and sides) with the Mod Podge Hard Coat.

Once dry, use the glue of your choice to glue cork or felt to the bottom of the tile.

Now, it's ready to use!

WIP Wednesday #20

The past few weeks have been a series of crafting FAILS for me.  Over and over and over my projects have fallen flat!

I did learn how to make a granny square though, and I'm HOPING to use that skill to make my husband a blanket for christmas.

Meanwhile, I hope you are ALL having better luck than me in the creativity department.

What have you been working on?  Share it below!

Right now we are trying to get our house ready for Hurricane Matthew to blow through and trying to decide whether to evauate or to ride it out.

Not really a fun decision!

Meanwhile I've been turning a toilet paper roll into something fun.

Stay tuned to find out what it is that I made. And...

Dreamcatcher - Art Journal Monday

I've been doing my collage art journal pages than anything else lately, using my tiny journal.

Today I broke out one of my larger sketchbooks and some acrylic paint.  No collage for me today.

I pulled up YouTube and opened a tutorial, but only loosely followed it.  (Video at end of blog.)

I had painted this page blue at one point for a project, but never did whatever I had planned.  It was perfect for this paint along.

My feathers did not turn out as nice as the Art Sherpa's.  Then again I'm not that good of an artist.  I also have sub-par (cheapest possible) supplies.

Still, I don't think I did that bad considering my skill level.  I like them.

By the time I got to the beads I just needed to get the page done, because I had to clear off the table for lunch.  (The dining room table is the only space I have to create art.)  So they just kind of got blotted on without any detailing.

And here is my Dreamcatcher all finished.  (Or is it?)
I couldn't help but feel SOMETHING was missing.

I hate to waste any paint, so I took what was left on the pallet and smeared with a brush all over the page in front of the one I was working on.

One day this will be the background of a new art journal page.

OR...it might just remain smears of paint on a page for the rest of its life, but at least it didn't go in the garbage like this lovely paper plate pallet did.

Meanwhile, after lunch, this happened.  I kept feeling like something was missing, and just had to do some of my "found poetry" on it.

So while most of this was hand painted, I ended up doing a little collage with text from a magazine.

And, here is the video that inspired this art journal page.

Journal Monday - My Happy Planner

Good Monday friends!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

This past week I didn't really do anything with my art journal, BUT, I did grab hold of my Happy Planner and got a little creative.

My Happy Planner "Follow Your Heart" is a
July 2016 - December 2017 one.
I bought my Planner a few months ago because, you know, all the cool kids were doing it.  It certainly wasn't because my life is particularly busy and in need of planning.  I work.  I come home.  I sleep.  I work.  I come home.  I sleep.

So needless to say, my planner was looking kind of pitiful.

Late last night I was flipping through my planner and thought, you know what, I'm gonna put something on these pages!

So, me being me I grabbed the nearest magazine (that just happened to be Teen Vogue) and a pair of scissors and my trusty gluestick, and I started flipping through, cutting out, gluing down.

What do any of these pictures have to do with my life in particular?  Not a darn thing really, other than I saw them and I liked them, so I put them on a page to stop it from being blank and boring.

It started with Yesterday (Sunday) and the dancing girl and the word "Happy"  and then I found a bright colorful ad, and then a couple of other images to fill in the blanks.  And my finished pages are colorful and fun.

This prompted me to dig out my old 5x7 Iris box that I once used to store words for my Found Poetry, and start going through it.  This box is small and compact, and can hold a couple of pens and a small glue stick as well so could toss it in my bag and travel with it if I wanted.

Gee, I wonder why this call this
machine the "X"?
Meanwhile I need to find where I put my Xyron X, which is also PERFECT for making stickers the in a size that would work with my happy planner.  I've had mine for several years now, first used it to make stickers for pen-pal letters and journal pages.  I wonder why I quit using it so much?

I have plans for doing more in my Happy Planner in the upcoming months.  I'm going to be making a Daily Habit Tracker starting in September for one thing.  I have a mood tracker that I've not been using and I need to start that again.

I've been looking into bullet journaling, and since the Happy Planner has graph paper I can work my favorite bullet journal ideas into my planner.

There is also a Fitness Planner extension that I'm going to use to make my own fitness planner.

WIP Wednesday #15

Happy (end of Wednesday) my friends!

Sorry this is coming so very late in the day but I'm just getting home from work, after spending the entire morning at the hospital for a surgical consult.

I still having started stitching on my Zenbroidery woman.  If her eyes were open I bet she'd be looking at me rather disdainfully.

I didn't do the washi tape/toothpick craft either, but I did do this!

www.blogbourne.com/how-to-create-paper-feathers-from-recycled-materials/?mref=nonersays

Yeah, its on a different site than this one, but I'm trying to post some things at places where I might actually earn a few cents (cause this starving artist is about to have to pay out of pocket for a surgery!)

So, what have you been up to this week?

Remember, this linky is open ALL WEEK LONG, so if you start a project feel free to jump on in and add your link!

Also, pass us around!  The more eyes the better!

WIP Wednesday #14

Hello my fellow creators!

I'm sorry to have left so much time between posts.  I've been a crafting slacker and ashamed to show my face just to say, "I didn't do anything." again and again and again.

This week I finally put my Zenbroidery in a hoop.  I still haven't actually stitched a thing on it, but its ready just in case.

Here is what she looks like out of the pack.

And here she is in her hoop.  I think I'm going to start with a satin stitch on her lips.

I'm also putting together the stuff to make a couple of projects for here an another site I write for.

Washi tape, toothpicks and book text (not pictured) will be involved in my next projects.
What do you think I'm making?

I also plan to pick up some craft feathers today (or soon), and if its not too early I plan to have a Fall Candle craft soon.

So, what have you been working on?  Please, share your projects with us!

This is my next project!

I've never done embroidery before, but I have cross stitched.
I have a couple of adult coloring books, and this, Zenbroidery, is like adult coloring but you do it with thread.

Meanwhile, share something with our linky!

Don't worry if your WIP isn't actually "crafty" in the technical sense.  As you can tell from the WIP I'm sharing below from Noner Says, there are lots of kinds of WIPs that you can share.

Journal Monday - Handmade Journal

I am an active watcher of art journal videos on YouTube.  Some of my favorite Art tubers have a certain day that they share art journal videos.  One does Monday's.  One does (or used to do) Wednesdays.

I've been toying with the idea of sharing my own art journals here on Monday's.  Sharing one (or all) of the spreads I do in a day.

I already have a collection of art journals, but thought I'd make Journal Monday here at A DIY Day even more special by making my own journal for it.

So today, between playing with my boys and going to see Ghostbusters, I managed to make this:

I think it is quite lovely if I do say so myself!  But can you guess what it started out life as?  Keep reading and you'll find out!

After watching a YouTube video where a woman was challening people to make 5 Junk Journals a week for 5 weeks, I thought I'd like to make one.  5 a week seemed a bit too much for me, but started with 1 seemed okay.

So I ran to my recycling box and I rescued this:

That's right, the base of this beautiful journal was a Kraft Mac and Cheese box!

First I opened up the box and cut off all the tabs like so:

After that I used some prints I had pulled off of my Gelli Plate using a live fern as a mask.

One print was used on the outer cover, the second was used on the inner cover.  I used Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue to glue the pages down.  I love the fast grab because it sticks quick and I don't have to clamp thing down, but it is SO thick.  I think I'm going to try to find a thinner glue next time.

The inner pages are recycled too.  They are a cardstock of unknown poundage.  They were scraps my husband brought home from his old job over 6 years ago and have been sitting around the house waiting to be used since.

I cut the scraps to fit my book (which is tall and narrow).

I made 4 signatures of 4 pages and each, and bound them in the book using a 3 hole pamphlet stitch.  I didn't use waxed thread, I just grabbed some DMC floss in yellow.

The words on the front read "Where I take a break from my day" and they were taking off of a magazine page.  I used paint the same colors as the journal cover to take the white off of the wording.

Once it was all said and done I thought I did a pretty good job.

What do you think?

WIP Wednesday #12

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

That's right, this WIP Wednesday is also the day that I was born!

This past week I cut some strips to make some paper beads, but then realized I cut them all wrong and tossed them out.

I still have 2 TP tubs on my desk begging me to finish that particular craft, a white dinosaur wondering why I painted it white and set it aside, and a cross stitch wondering if I'd ever pick it up again.

I'm a procrastinating crafter right now.

Meanwhile, share something with our linky!

WIP Wednesday #11

Happy Wednesday Friends!

Was this past week productive for you?

I had that pesky wisdom tooth taken out.  The dentist joked that I should make a necklace out of it.  I did keep it.

I have bought myself a Happy Planner. Since it doesn't start until July, and it is only June, I had to fix that.  So I've been making pages for the planner.  Like this cover page for June:

A magazine ad, glued to cardstock, cut do wn to size.
And this mood tracking chart:

Also, I snapped a picture of this painting where I work.

You are suppoed to hang photos from the clothespins.  But I'm thinking about making something similar as a mixed media canvas and leaving off the clothespins.  Don't really have a long narrow canvas though, so we'll have to see.

WIP Wednesday #10

HAPPY WEDNESDAY CREATIVE PEOPLE!

This past week I've been on a cleaning spree, looking at my WIPs and not doing a darn thing to any of them!

I've had a horrible tooth ache, and I' going today to have a Wisdom Tooth taken out.

I have intentions of finishing my toilet paper roll craft this week, and making working on some paper beads.  Doing some cross stitch too.

Meanwhile, share something with our linky!

WIP Wednesday #9

Hello again to all my crafty friends!

I almost started this and said "Well, another week went by and I didn't do a darn thing!"  But that's not true!

I poked the starter holes in this cardstock to be stitched.  They are calendar bookmarks!

Then my son brought this out (at nearly 9pm) and wanted to play with it.  Its new to him.  He got it yesterday.  So tomorrow I'll have to make some playdough cupcakes with him, and write up a review too!

Coloring in Wonderland

Follow the White Rabbit into this imaginative coloring book inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, featuring intricate pen-and-ink drawings by acclaimed artist Amily Shen.  Meet the Cheshire Cat, attend the Mad Hatter's tea party, and play croquet with the Queen of Hearts in this evocative tale that invites you into a strange and beautiful new world of coloring.

As you can probably guess from the title of this adult coloring book, Wonderland is inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

It is an adult coloring book that tells you a story.

The narrator (presumably the artist)is sketching on a warm day, when she notices something run by.  A rabbit in a waistcoat, of course, late for a party.

The narrator follows the rabbit and finds herself in Wonderland.

Each "Chapter" of the book has a block of text telling what is happening on the next few pages.

You see the hatters tea party, play croquet with the queen, visit the white rabbits house and more.

If you are familar with the story of Alice in Wonderland you will find this coloring book whimsical and fun.

But it is origional art.  You are not just coloring Disney-esque recreations.  So if you only know Alice through the Disney movie this is not the Wonderland you know.

There is also the bonus of this book urging you to flex your creative muscles beyond coloring pages.  Some of the pages ask you to draw on them.  To add more colorful butterfly friends, to create your own tea party cakes and more.  There is even a scavenger hunt, asking you to find things the White Rabbit lost in his rush.

The pages are cardstock but are not overly heavy.  They are also double sided so I would not recommend using markers to color in Wonderland.

 Hello again my crafty friends!

Wednesday has Rolled around again and I'm happy to see you visiting the blog to see whats up!

Know what's on my table for this week?  Here's a hint.

It involves the core of this kind of industrial TP roll you see in retail stores!

If the crafty gods smile upon me you'll be seeing that one on Friday!

Collage This Journal Review

This journal is full of prompts to give you
a jumping off place when you are ready
to begin art journaling for the first time.
If you have ever thought that you might want to start an art journal, but have a fear of facing a blank page, then Collage This Journal by Elanore Shakespeare might be the perfect place for you to start.

This journal has 52 projects to help you create a visual diary or collage journal.  Some people also call them gluebooks when they are more cut and paste than pencil and paint.

Each page, or spread, has a prompt on it.  All you have to do is find images to fit that prompt and glue them onto the page.

You can use photographs of your own, or hunt images down from other sources like the internet, or magazines.  You can even doodle and draw your own responses if you prefer.

The pages are nice and thick so most inks will not bleed through.  I wouldn't recommend using a lot of wet media, or even too much liquid glue though.  Elmers X-Treme is my favorite glue stick for gluebooking.

Here are a few examples of the prompts you will find inside the book.  (I took these before I started playing with the book.  Too bashful to share my own images right now)

Who would get an invitation to your ultimate dinner party?
For example, you might fill these pages with your favorite actors and actresses, your favorite historical people.  You curent friends and family.  Even the president of the USA.  Who do you want to have a dinner party with?

Collage secret things on these pages and sew them shut.
Have something secret you want to get off your chest?  Dump them on this page.  Sew (or glue) the pages together and you have released your secret without telling a soul.

Create your perfect view.
This one can be drawn, or pasted in.  Or find images of your dream vacation destination.  You can put the on these pages and start your own "get away" fund to pay for a trip there one day.  (then take the book, and take a picture of it there....and you have another visual diary entry for another book!)

This book is great for collage artists, beginning art journalers, and even for scrapbookers  and smashbookers looking for a different way to smash.

Pick one up today for yourself, or as a gift.
